What Is Core Drilling?

Anchoring is the engineered connection of new elements to existing concrete — fixing steel, reinforcement, equipment, and structural members where no cast-in provision exists. Done correctly, a post-installed anchor performs as reliably as one cast into the original pour.

Power Builders installs chemical (resin) anchors, mechanical anchors, and post-installed rebar (dowelling) using qualified products and the manufacturer’s approved methods. Connections are designed to recognised standards such as EN 1992-4 and ACI 318, with hole geometry, cleaning, and embedment controlled to achieve the design capacity.

This service sits within our Specialized Contracting sector and underpins much of our strengthening and structural modification work, where reliably connecting new reinforcement to the existing structure is critical.

Why You Need It

An anchor is only as good as its installation. A connection that looks secure but was drilled, cleaned, or embedded incorrectly can fail under load — with consequences ranging from cracked finishes to structural collapse.

Engineered anchoring removes that risk. Using qualified products, correct embedment, and on-site pull-out testing to verify capacity, we provide connections that can be relied upon — essential for strengthening, extensions, equipment fixing, and any modification to an existing structure.

Our Process

  1. Design & Product Selection

The connection is designed to the required loads, and a qualified anchor or resin system is selected for the substrate and conditions.

  2. Setting Out & Drilling

Positions are set out clear of existing reinforcement and services, and holes are drilled to the specified diameter and depth.

  3. Installation

Holes are cleaned to the manufacturer’s procedure and anchors or rebar are installed with the correct resin, embedment, and curing.

  4. Load Testing & Verification

Where specified, anchors are proof-load or pull-out tested on site to confirm they achieve the design capacity before handover.

Techniques & Equipment

  • Chemical (Resin) Anchors High-capacity bonded anchors for cracked and uncracked concrete
  • Mechanical Anchors Expansion and undercut anchors for immediate load
  • Post-Installed Rebar Dowelling new reinforcement into existing structures
  • Threaded Rod & Stud Fixing Securing steelwork, brackets, and equipment
  • On-Site Pull-Out Testing Proof testing to verify installed capacity
  • Hole Cleaning & Embedment Control Manufacturer-approved procedures for full capacity

Frequently Asked Questions

Mechanical anchors hold by expansion against the drilled hole and can be loaded immediately; chemical anchors bond into the hole with a resin, giving high capacity and better performance in cracked concrete. We select whichever suits the load and substrate.

Yes. Post-installed rebar (dowelling) bonds new reinforcement into the existing structure with resin, designed and installed so the connection performs like a cast-in bar.

Capacity depends on correct product selection, drilling, hole cleaning, and embedment. Where specified, we carry out on-site pull-out testing to verify the installed anchors achieve the design load.

Post-installed anchors and rebar connections are designed to recognised standards such as EN 1992-4 and ACI 318, using qualified products installed to the manufacturer’s method.

For chemical anchors, dust left in the hole prevents the resin from bonding to the concrete and can dramatically reduce capacity. Following the manufacturer’s cleaning procedure is essential to achieving the rated load.
